How to Reconnect with Family While Social Distancing

At Bahamia Rental, we know a thing or two about spending lots of time with family - we are a family-operated company after all. It’s both a blessing and a game of survival, wrapped into one.

“Social Distancing” is the new buzzword of the day. While it’s going to be difficult (Lord please send these chirrin back to school!) , it’s also an opportunity to spend more time together. Here are some creative ways that you and your families can reconnect while social distancing.

1. Movie Nights

Get out the popcorn, and finally watch that movie you’ve been putting off for another day. To keep it interesting, how about only watching movies shot in The Bahamas? Casino Royale anyone? Into the Blue? Here’s a comprehensive list to pick from. As a bonus, I challenge you to binge as many Sidney Poitier movies as you can, in honor of the most famous Bahamian in film history.

2. Board Games

Ain’ nothing wrong with some good competition. Put the laptops, phones, and tablets away and bring out the board games. I recommend the most Bahamian game of them all: dominoes! The familiar sound of domino tiles slammed down onto kitchen counters and patio tables is a great way to spend any evening. Monopoly and scrabble are also good picks.

3. Workouts

Indoor physical exercise is a good way to keep fit, tire the kids out, and stay sane. Use YouTube to find workout videos you and your family can participate in together. Items in the living room like couch cushions can also be used as props to keep workouts varied and interesting.

4. Cooking

Food is therapeutic. Preparing meals as a family fosters teamwork and teaches valuable life skills. If your grandparents passed down the secret to making that peas n’ rice or fried fish pop, now is the time to share it with your children. If there’s a recipe you’ve been dying to try, what are you waiting for? Give it a go!

5. Story Telling

Storytelling and spoken word is an indelible part of our culture, and our history is rich with legends and folklore. Use this time to share stories like ber Bookie and ber Rabbie with your family. If you don’t remember them or have the books handy, there are plenty on YouTube. Here’s one narrated by the late-great, Patricia Bazard. Anansi is another popular series of Caribbean folktales that teach valuable lessons and entertain endlessly.

6. Skype Sessions

Social distancing doesn’t mean we can’t connect with one another. During this time, designate a night that you and your family will video chat with other loved ones, or friends you may not have heard from in a while. Get creative too - you can combine virtually any of the aforementioned activities with video chat to keep things fresh and new.

7. Music

In this era of social distancing, performers are using social media to stream their concerts - for FREE! If you and your family love live music, this is a wonderful silver lining in these strange times. Major Lazer, Erykah Badu and Ariana Grande are just a few of the artists who have livestreamed concerts this month. If you want to keep tabs on who’s performing, here’s a regularly updated list.
